What’s not to love? If this hasn’t got you to the nearest video store to stop this madness….

Seriously, I was thoroughly irritated by the very idea that we had to wait till Christmas for this game, and then we got it with nary a bleat from you lot until well after release, barely a month behind schedule.

So there is a story. You control a young blood named Tarnished, a young man from a village called the Outland, who embarks on a grand quest to save the beauty of the Outlands and the Outland, from the dark forces that plan to finish what Merlin and Galadria stopped: The destruction of the world.

The graphics are excellent, as you’d expect from a company that has produced the rather excellent Magicka and The Banner Saga. The landscapes are extremely pretty, and the colour palette is just right for the overall aesthetic.

The balance between my character and enemies is quite good. As you level, enemies become better suited to your class and abilities, and you get better weapons to survive with (and sometimes better magic too). However, when I fight an uber boss, it’s still fairly linear, and I don’t feel as if I can do much of anything to stop it. I might be looking for excuses, but most of the bosses are so easy I could’ve avoided the vast majority of them if I’d wanted to, which probably shows that even the bosses aren’t challenging enough.

I also can’t decide on the best order to explore the game. Should I focus more on one zone at a time, or should I visit them all as soon as I reach them? My advice would be to go through them in order, since the worlds are all connected in some way or other. One question that you might have, though, is why the game isn’t cumulative. Is that a bug or a design decision? This game could’ve been so much more if it just had a save system and multiplayer.
