The movie title was originally Nautanki (nautanki means heat in Hindi)Saala, meaning «The Birth», but it was changed in the release to simply Saala after the actor’s marriage to Tamil actress Rani. The film was shot in Daman and Diu, Kutch, Gujarat and was helmed by debutant director Zia Sarhadi.
The film did not do well commercially and criticized by the Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh for its content. The film opened on 1 June 2013 and collected around 7.5 crore with an average of 5.5 crore per day.
Plot
Ravi (Ayushmann Khurrana) is a young man who is in love with Radhika (Kunal Mitra), a beautiful girl of his college and has sought her hand in marriage. Radhika is in love with Ravi, but she is reluctant to marry Ravi because of his poverty. When Ravi’s family is on a vacation, he spots Mandar (Kunaal Roy Kapur), who is troubled and lonely. Ravi and Mandar form a friendship and the situation begins to get serious. Radhika misunderstands the situation and leaves. Mandar is shocked to know that Radhika has left. Ravi decides to find out what happened. He meets Radhika who tells him that she loves him, but she has to leave for her own good. Ravi comes to know about Mandar’s problems. Mandar is a poor man and has a beautiful daughter Shanti (Jashaa Ranjan) whom he wants to marry off. He cannot afford the expenses to get married and is worried about the future of his daughter. Mandar meets Radhika and tries to convince her to join him. Ravi convinces Radhika to return to Mandar, by giving her a very good reason to marry him. He tells her that Mandar is crazy and there is a dark side to his personality. He says that Mandar takes drugs, drinks and has been seeing a woman behind Ravi’s back.
